Why would I download transactions?

You may choose to download transactions to help you track the completed transactions for an account. For example, you may track your expenses for budget planning purposes.   Back to top

I downloaded transactions to Microsoft® Money and some of the names are missing. Why?

In older versions of Microsoft® Money, an alias name was created for payees when you manually changed a name to something else during reconciliation or matched a statement to an existing register item with a different name. To avoid problems with incorrectly aliasing some of the more common names, aliases are not created for the following names:

  1. ACH credit
  2. ACH debit
  3. ATM
  4. ATM debit
  5. ATM deposit
  6. Cash
  7. Check
  8. Credit
  9. Debit
  10. Deposit
  11. Point of sale
  12. Purchase
  13. Withdrawal

Instead, Microsoft® Money drops these name values when entering into the register and you will not see them. We agree that this is not ideal for these transactions, but better than the alternative of every "ATM debit" downloading as "Gift for Grandma" or whatever else you entered during the first download. Some servers have chosen to put this information in the Memo, so that it is still available for viewing. Later versions of Microsoft® Money include features to allow users to manage this aliasing more directly.   Back to top

I am being asked what application I want to use to open the download file. What do I do?

If you are using Netscape® 7.x to download either a comma-separated file (.CSV) or a Quicken®-format file (.QIF) you may be asked what application you want to use to open the file.

To address this issue, you need to define the .CSV and/or .QIF file type in Netscape® 7.x by completing the following steps:

  1. In Netscape® 7.x, click the Edit menu item and then Preferences.
  2. On the Preferences page, double-click the Navigator category and then click Helper Applications.
  3. On the Helper Applications workspace, click New Type. The New Type page is displayed.
  4. On the New Type page, enter the following information:
    1. MIME Type. For CSV, enter TEXT/ CSV. For QIF, enter TEXT/QIF.
    2. Description. For CSV, enter Comma Separated Values. For QIF, enter QuickenŽ-Format File
    3. Extension. For CSV, enter CSV. For QIF, enter QIF.
    4. When a file of this type is encountered. Select Save it to Disk.
  5. On the New Type page, click OK.
  6. On the Preferences page, click OK.
